Why Does the Car Still Feel Normal When the Yellow PADM Warning Light Appears?

Why the car still feels normal:
When PADM fails, the magnetorheological (MR) fluid returns to its lowest viscosity. As a result, the active engine mount effectively functions as a passive mount. During normal driving with low G-forces, the difference in vehicle behavior is barely noticeable.
The risk of coding out the fault:
Coding out the fault message only removes the warning from the dashboard. It does not restore the active function of the engine mounts. During hard acceleration, Launch Control, or spirited driving, engine and transmission movement may increase because the mounts are no longer being actively controlled.
The cost of doing nothing:
Depending on local inspection regulations, a PADM fault may affect vehicle inspections (APK/TÜV/MOT). In addition, an active warning light can negatively impact the resale value of your Porsche.

Does a PADM fault mean you can no longer drive the car? Why does the vehicle still feel completely normal?
In this article, we look beyond the often expensive dealer repair costs and explain how the PADM system actually works, based on official Porsche engineering principles and chassis dynamics.
1. Myth: "PADM Only Works When I Press Sport or Sport Plus"
The reality: PADM is a continuously active engine mount control system and not exclusively a Sport-mode feature.
A common misconception is that PADM works like the exhaust valves: inactive in Normal mode and only activated in Sport mode.
Technically, this is incorrect.
PADM uses magnetorheological (MR) fluid — a fluid whose viscosity changes when exposed to a magnetic field. Internal electromagnetic coils continuously adjust the stiffness of the engine mounts based on real-time driving conditions.
According to Porsche, the dynamic engine and transmission mounts were developed to reduce drivetrain vibrations while simultaneously limiting unwanted movement of the engine and transmission that could negatively affect vehicle handling.
During relaxed driving, the system prioritizes comfort and vibration isolation.
During acceleration, braking, rapid load changes, or spirited cornering, the system increases mount stiffness to improve steering precision and vehicle stability.
Sport and Sport Plus make this dynamic behavior more noticeable because the control strategy becomes more aggressive. However, PADM is not a simple on/off system that only becomes active after pressing the Sport button.
As a result, a failed PADM sensor can affect vehicle dynamics even when Sport or Sport Plus is not selected.
2. The Paradox: "The Warning Light Is On, but I Don't Feel Any Difference"
The technical explanation: the system has reverted to its fail-safe operating strategy.
This is completely normal.
When the internal sensor chip fails due to prolonged heat exposure and vibration (PIWIS fault codes 001013 or 001023), the control unit disables power to the engine mount to prevent unpredictable dynamic behavior.
Without electrical power, the magnetic field within the MR fluid disappears, causing the fluid to return to its lowest viscosity.
As a result, the active engine mount effectively behaves like a passive hydraulic engine mount.
The MR fluid itself remains present, meaning the engine and transmission continue to be fully supported.
During daily commuting or relaxed driving, most drivers therefore notice little to no difference in vehicle behavior.
When Does the Difference Become Noticeable?
The limitations become apparent during dynamic driving transitions such as:
- Rapid slalom maneuvers
- Abrupt direction changes
- Heavy braking
- Trail braking into a corner
- Hard acceleration
Under these conditions, a properly functioning PADM system would stiffen the engine mounts within milliseconds to control drivetrain movement.
Without this electromagnetic stiffening effect, the combined mass of the engine and transmission can move more freely under longitudinal and lateral forces.
From a chassis dynamics perspective, this additional movement disrupts the vehicle's optimal weight transfer characteristics and can create an undesirable secondary yaw moment at the rear axle.
For the driver, this may be experienced as:
- Slightly slower steering response
- Reduced rear-end stability
- Less precise chassis behavior
- A reduction in the elastokinematic precision Porsche is known for
3. The Pitfall of Coding Out the Fault
What do you actually lose when you have a PADM fault coded out?
Many independent workshops and some owners choose to code out the PADM fault using PIWIS so that the warning message disappears from the dashboard.
Although the dashboard no longer displays a warning afterwards, the underlying mechanical problem remains completely unchanged.
The fault is simply hidden.
The active function of the engine mounts is not restored.
Permanent Loss of Active Control
The engine mounts continue to operate in their passive fail-safe mode.
During aggressive cornering or heavy braking, the engine and transmission can therefore move more than Porsche originally intended.
Potential Risks During Launch Control
We have not tested whether Launch Control remains available while a PADM fault is active or after the fault code has been coded out.
However, what is certain is that coding out the fault does not restore the active function of the engine mounts.
If the vehicle is driven aggressively while the mounts remain in their soft fail-safe mode, drivetrain movement and vibrations under load may increase.
This is not the operating condition for which Porsche engineered the PADM system.
Increased Mechanical Stress
When the vehicle is driven spiritedly for extended periods while PADM is no longer functioning, the rubber components of the engine mounts are subjected to higher mechanical loads.
Over time, this additional movement can contribute to accelerated wear or even cause the engine mount rubber to tear.
4. The Hidden Cost of Doing Nothing
Besides losing the driving characteristics that Porsche engineered into the chassis, leaving a PADM fault unresolved can also have practical consequences.
Vehicle Inspection (APK / TÜV / MOT)
Inspection requirements vary by country and inspection authority.
A PADM fault does not automatically result in a failed inspection everywhere.
However, if the warning is classified as a fault affecting the chassis, suspension, stability control, or another safety-related system, or if additional defects are found during the inspection, it may affect the vehicle's approval.
For this reason, we recommend having the PADM fault diagnosed and repaired before a scheduled vehicle inspection.
Impact on Resale Value
Experienced Porsche buyers and dealers are now well aware of this issue.
Because replacing complete OEM PADM units at a Porsche dealership is expensive, an active yellow PADM warning is often used as a significant negotiating point during a purchase or trade-in.
Repairing the fault beforehand can help preserve your Porsche's resale value.

The actual failure is almost always caused by the internal electronic sensor becoming loose or failing.
Replacing the entire mechanical assembly—only for the same electronic failure to potentially occur again in the future—is therefore not always the most sustainable technical solution.
On the other hand, simply coding out the fault solves nothing; it merely hides the problem.
By understanding what the yellow PADM warning light actually means, Porsche owners can make a well-informed decision.
