Does your Porsche have a PADM fault, an active engine mount warning, or fault codes such as 001013 or 001023?

Replacing the complete Porsche Dynamic Engine Mount (PADM) is not always necessary. In many cases, the fault is caused by a defective PADM sensor. Replacing only the sensor allows you to keep the original active engine mount while significantly reducing repair costs.

In this guide, we explain step by step how to remove the original Porsche PADM sensor and install an upgraded replacement sensor.

Important: There are several different types of PADM replacement sensors. Always verify which sensor type is compatible with your Porsche before starting the installation.

What Is a Porsche PADM Sensor?

PADM stands for Porsche Dynamic Engine Mount. The system uses electronically controlled active engine mounts to adjust the stiffness of the engine mounts according to driving conditions.

The PADM sensor monitors the position and movement of the active engine mount. When the sensor fails, the Porsche can detect a fault and store a warning or diagnostic fault code.

Common fault codes associated with a defective PADM sensor include:

  • 001013 – PADM
  • 001023 – PADM
  • PADM fault
  • Active engine mount fault
  • Engine mount malfunction
  • PADM disabled

When diagnostics confirm that the sensor is the cause of the fault, replacing only the sensor can be a significantly more cost-effective solution than replacing the complete active engine mount.

Which PADM Sensor Do I Need?

There are currently four different types of replacement sensors.

Type A – Porsche 982 / 981 / 991

Type A is used for Porsche 981, 982 and 991 models.

Type B – Porsche 718 / 982

Type B is used for selected Porsche 718 / 982 models.

Type C – Porsche 992

Type C is used for selected Porsche 992 models.

Type D – Porsche 997

Type D is used for selected Porsche 997 models.

Always verify compatibility before ordering a replacement sensor.

Required Tools

You will need the following tools and materials to replace the Porsche PADM sensor:

  • Vehicle lift or suitable car jack
  • Socket wrench and socket set
  • 2.5 mm flat-head screwdriver
  • Grinder or Dremel, if required
  • Soldering iron
  • Silicone grease
  • Suitable silicone sealant
  • Safety gloves
  • Safety goggles
  • Supplied replacement screws and installation tool

Make sure the vehicle is safely and securely supported before starting any work.

Step 1 – Remove the Old PADM Sensor

  1. Safely raise the vehicle using a vehicle lift or suitable car jack.
  2. Remove the engine protection cover underneath the vehicle.
  3. The two PADM engine mounts can be accessed directly. Normally, no other components need to be removed.
  4. Support the transmission with a suitable jack.
  5. First, remove the bolts securing the PADM engine mounts to the chassis.
  6. Then remove the bolts securing the PADM brackets.
  7. Disconnect the electrical connector from the original PADM sensor.
  8. Remove the PADM unit or sensor according to the procedure applicable to your Porsche model.

Take care around the electrical connector and wiring to avoid causing damage.

Step 2 – Prepare the PADM for the New Sensor

The original PADM sensor mounting screws have an unusual head design and are not suitable for the new sensor.

Always use the screws supplied with the replacement sensor.

The sensor must also be installed in the correct orientation. The sensor must face upward. Incorrect positioning can cause the magnetic fluid inside the PADM engine mount to leak.

Modifying the PADM Bracket

On some vehicles, the right-hand PADM bracket may interfere with installation of the new sensor.

If necessary:

  1. Carefully grind away the section of the bracket that interferes with the sensor.
  2. Remove only the minimum amount of material required.
  3. Never separate the sensor from its bracket.
  4. Smooth the modified surface.
  5. Apply a protective layer of paint or suitable coating to prevent corrosion.

Step 3 – Remove the Original Electronics

The original PADM sensor contains an electronic circuit board. This must be removed before installing the replacement sensor.

1. Remove the anti-tamper screws

Locate the four screws with triangular heads.

Use a 2.5 mm flat-head screwdriver to carefully remove the screws.

The replacement kit includes four new hex-head screws and the required installation tool.

2. Remove the circuit board

Carefully grind down the three pins securing the circuit board.

Once the pins have been removed, carefully take out the original circuit board.

3. Level the mounting points

Carefully grind the three remaining pins and the three raised points until they are level.

Make sure the surface is clean and free of metal particles before continuing.

4. Remove the original sensor

Once the mounting points have been levelled, carefully remove the original sensor.

5. Apply sealant

Apply suitable silicone sealant around the sensor.

Alternatively, the sealant can be applied to the bottom of the replacement sensor.

Make sure all sealing surfaces are clean and free from oil and dirt.

Step 4 – Install the New Porsche PADM Sensor

The replacement PADM sensor can now be installed.

  1. Position the new sensor correctly.
  2. Make sure the sensor is facing upward.
  3. Apply silicone grease and the required sealing layer.
  4. Secure the sensor using the supplied screws.
  5. Tighten the screws securely, but do not overtighten them.
  6. Reconnect the original electrical connector.
  7. Check that the sensor and wiring are correctly positioned.

A proper seal is important because the PADM engine mount contains magnetic fluid. Incorrect installation or inadequate sealing can result in leakage and premature failure.

Step 5 – Reinstall the PADM Engine Mount

Once the new sensor has been installed:

  1. Reinstall the PADM unit.
  2. Reconnect the electrical connector.
  3. Reinstall the PADM brackets.
  4. Tighten all mounting bolts according to the Porsche specifications.
  5. Remove the transmission support.
  6. Reinstall the engine protection cover underneath the vehicle.

Always use the correct torque specifications for your specific Porsche model.

Step 6 – Check the PADM System

After installation:

  1. Start the Porsche.
  2. Check the dashboard for warning messages.
  3. Read the fault memory using suitable diagnostic equipment.
  4. Clear stored PADM fault codes if required.
  5. Check that the PADM system is functioning correctly.
  6. Take the vehicle for a test drive and check again for stored fault codes.

If the original fault was caused by the PADM sensor, replacing the sensor should restore normal operation of the system.

If the fault remains, the wiring, connector, active engine mount and other components of the PADM system should be inspected and diagnosed further.

Porsche PADM Sensor Replacement vs. Complete Engine Mount

A PADM fault does not automatically mean that the complete active engine mount is defective.

The sensor is a separate component of the PADM system and can itself be the cause of the fault.

When diagnostics confirm that the sensor is defective, replacing only the PADM sensor can be a much more cost-effective solution than replacing the complete Porsche Dynamic Engine Mount.

Does your Porsche have fault code 001013 or 001023? Always diagnose the fault correctly before ordering replacement parts.
